Chapter 34

David and Brie were enjoying breakfast on the veranda to their hotel room.  David was on the phone with the real estate agent telling her that they were interested in smaller houses that were more suited for two.  Brie swore that there were times when Hebrew and Yiddish were easier for him to speak than English because they seemed to come so naturally to him.  Little did she know, he thought the same thing about her.  As she sat and listened to him speaking in Hebrew, she felt her cell phone vibrate in her pocket a moment before it started to play ‘The Infection’- Jake’s ringtone on her phone.  She pulled it out of her pocket and answered it softly.  “Hello?”
“Hey Mom.  It’s Jake.  Why are you whispering?”
“Your father’s on the phone with our agent over here.  We’ve decided to look at smaller houses and just fly back to the states to see you kids every Hanukkah.  What’s up?”
“I really need you and Dad to hear something that’s very important.”
“Is everything ok, Jacob?”
“No.  You’re youngest daughter is on my shit list right now.”
“Oh?  And why might that be?”
“That’s what I need you and Dad to hear.  I don’t mean to ruin your vacation, but this is an emergency.  The kind of emergency that if I don’t tell you and Dad, especially Dad, someone’s going to end up in the emergency room.”
“Sounds serious.  Hold on.  Let me get your father’s attention.”  She looked in David’s direction and waved.  “We’re both needed, baby”, she whispered.
He nodded and finished his conversation in Hebrew.  Once he hung up, he looked at his wife.  “Ok.  What’s going on?” he asked.
She put her phone on speaker and spoke again.  “Ok, Jake.  We’re both here.  Tell us what’s going on.”
“Dad?  Let me hear that you’re there.  Not that I don’t trust Mom.   I want to make sure that you’re listening.”
“I’m here, Jacob”, David said.  “Speak, son.  What’s going on?”
“Did either of you know that Jessi was dating?”
David’s eyes grew wide.  “Um… no.  Is she?”
“Oh, I’m afraid it’s a little more serious than dating, Dad.  Apparently, he’s already rounded home with your baby girl and he’s been bragging about it.”
“Hold on”, Brie said.  “Bragging that he’s had sex with his girlfriend or that he’s had sex with David Draiman’s youngest daughter?”
“The latter, Mom.”
She looked at her husband and saw he starting to turn red.  He was getting pissed.   “Calm down, David.  I’m sure we don’t have the whole story.”
“Oh, it gets worse, Dad”, Jake said.
“I honestly don’t see how, Jacob”, David said through his teeth.
“He’s the front man for an aspiring punk band and he thinks that boning your baby will get him street cred and a record deal.  He fancies himself a new version of you.”
David’s voice was low and careful when next he spoke.  “Put my daughter on the phone, now, Jacob.”
Jake’s voice was quiet as he pulled the phone away from his ear to hand it to Jessi.  “Dad wants to talk to you and he’s not very happy.”
Jessi’s voice came next.  “Yes, sir?” she said sheepishly.
“What is this little punk’s name, Jessykah?”  David’s hands were shaking, but it didn’t show in his voice.  His voice was steady and dangerous.
“Jeremy Caldwell.”
“You are not to see him again until I find out if this shit is true.  I realize that you’re nineteen years old, but if you value my sanity, you will do as I say.  Do I make myself perfectly fucking crystal clear, Jessykah Danyelle Draiman?”
He heard his daughter take a deep, shaking breath in.  “Yes, sir.”
“Good.  Now, put Jake back on the phone.”
Jake’s voice came back after a soft thud.  “I’m back, Dad.  Jessi just ran up the stairs crying.”
“I’m not sorry.  I hope she’s thoroughly scared because she’s going to see, if these accusations are true, just how easy it is to be taken advantage of because your last name is the same as a rock star.”
“Any special orders, Dad?”
“Yeah.  Keep as close an eye on her as you boys can until I get back.  If you have to barricade her in her room, do it.  I don’t want her seeing him until I get back and find if this shit is true or not.”
“Understood.  We’ll make it happen, Cap’n.”
“Good.  Now, you’re mother and I need to get ready to go meet a friend of mine in a different part of country so that we can go diving to take our minds off of this shit.  Make sure that everyone behaves themselves until we get back, Jacob.”
“Yes, sir.  Will do.”
“Good.  Good bye.”  He hit the end call button.
“You need to calm down, David”, Brie said softly, taking his hands in hers.
“I’m trying, love.  But, hearing that some dumb little peckerwood is taking advantage of my baby pisses me off.”
“I realize that, sugar, but you also have to realize that this boy and Marc never got along in school.  Marc could be just saying this shit to get Jessi to leave the guy alone.”
“None of our children would do that.  They’ve all been taught what a lie can do.”
“Well, we’ll have to wait until we get back to the states to deal with that.  Right now, there’s nothing we can do other than hope for the best and be prepared for the worst.”  She brought his hands up to press a kiss to the backs of them.
He smiled softly at her.  “Where would I be without you?”
“On the first plane back to the US to kill some little boy who wants to be you.”
With that, he couldn’t argue.
---------------
They took a small plane into Egypt for their diving trip.  Brie was excited to see a camel up close and personal for the first time.  “While we’re here, we’re going to have to go for a camel ride.  You do realize that, right?” she laughed.
“Oh, I figured as much.  I know you.  You’re a sucker for fun little shit like that.”
“Well, of course.  You’ve gotten to do it.  I never have.  I want to ride a camel.”
“And we will, baby.  Don’t worry.  Like I could deny you that.”
“Good.  Because if you had tried, I might have just had to get creative in my persuasion.”
“Oh?  Then we’re not going.  No camel ride unless you can convince me that you deserve it.”
“Are we going directly from here to the beach?”
“No, I figured we’d get settled into a hotel first.”
“What time are we supposed to meet Joe?”
He checked his watch.  It was still early.  “Not for a while.”
“Then I have plenty of time to try to convince you to take me on a camel ride before we leave the country to go back to Israel.”
“I’m planning on us being here for a couple of days.  It gives me time to clear my head a little bit before we go back to house hunting.”
“That’s fine.  Let’s just get to our hotel and get settled in so that I can convince you that I’ve been a good girl and that I should get to go on a camel ride.”
“You can start trying to convince me as soon as you like.”
“Oh, David, you should NOT have said that to me.”  She leaned into him and traced the tip of her tongue along his earlobe and listened to him take a deep breath and let it out slowly.
As he started to take his neck breath, she started to trace the inside of his ear.  His breathing caught.  “Ok, stop for now, please.  I don’t want to cause an international incident in the back seat of an Egyptian cab”, he asked in a shaky voice.
“Say yes to the camel ride”, she whispered in a husky voice.
“Never.”
She continued to let her tongue play along his ear and listened to his responses.  His breathing was labored.  Even though he was taking deep breaths, he was letting them out rather quickly after catching what breath.  “Say yes, David”, she whispered again.
“No.”  There was less conviction there.  She knew she was getting through his guard.  He never could keep his guard up for very long around her.  She stopped for the remainder of their ride to the hotel they were going to stay at.  And he was relieved.  If she’d kept up what she was doing, he was going to cause an international incident and take her right there in the back seat of that taxi.  Once they’d stopped at their hotel and were safely inside in the lobby, she started messing with him again.  One hand slid under the back of his t-shirt so that she could run nail softly along the skin of his back.  He let out a shudder as they stood in line and waited to check in.  His eyes closed and he swallowed.  “Are you trying to torment me?”
“I’m going to do whatever it takes to get you to say yes to that camel ride I want to take.  Surrender and this will all stop.”
“But, what if I don’t want it to stop?”
She pulled her hand back and stuck the both in her pockets.  “Fine.  If you want it to continue, you’ll say yes.”
He looked at her out of the corner of his eye.  “You’re evil.  Fine.  You’ll get to take a camel ride before we leave Egypt”, he laughed.
She slipped her hand back under his shirt to continue the torture as he checked them into their suite, and the entire trip up to the room in the elevator.  Once they were on the other side of the door and the bell boy had left, he took over.  He pinned her to the door and crushed his lips against hers.  Her tiny hands pushed his shirt up so that she could touch the skin of his stomach as his big hands unfastened her jeans.  He’d endured all he could of her torture.  He was going to get even with her for what she put him through during the cab ride and in the hotel lobby.
Their clothes hit the floor and he laid her on the bed.  Her legs hung off the edge.  He stood long enough to pull her hips to the edge then dropped to his knees.  He kissed up her thigh on one side, then the other.  He was going to torment her the way she’d tormented him.  He wanted to take his time; even if it meant that they didn’t go diving that day.  There was always tomorrow.  Those were his thoughts as he lowered his mouth to her core and tormented her with his tongue.
---------------
“I wonder what my parents are doing right this moment”, Jeremiah mused as he and Jona lay in bed that night.
“Why?” she asked with a giggle.
“Because their last vacation was all mysterious and shit.  I’m just curious.  Where are they?  What are they doing?”
“That sounds more like a Jake concern than a ‘Miah concern”, she teased.
He laughed.  “It takes my mind off of the shit with Jessi and the loser she’s been dating.”
“What’s going on with that?”
“Dad’s not happy, but he’s saving his investigation until he gets home.”
“Figures your Dad would want to wait until he gets home to look into that.”
“It’s probably Mom’s idea.”
She shrugged, then let out a sigh of content.  “Let’s change the subject, shall we?”
“Sure, what do you want to talk about?”
“Your mother’s obsession over our wedding.”
“She’s doing what she thinks is best, baby.  You’ll have to forgive her for obsessing.  She doesn’t really have anything else to do now that she’s retired.”
“But, I’m not picky.”
“Neither am I.  Just let her have fun.  It will all be over soon.”
“Are you sure?”
“Oh yeah.  Mom will calm down once your Dad walks you down the aisle and we’re both standing before the Reverend and God becoming man and wife.”
“Will your Mom cry?”
“Is the sky blue?”
“Did your Dad cry when Jake or Malachai got married?”
“Nope.”
“What about Maddie?”
“Like a baby.  He didn’t want to let his little princess go.  He wasn’t ready for her to become someone else’s queen.”
“I think that’s how my Dad’s going to be.  I don’t know if he’ll cry, but I’m sure he’s not going to be ready to let me go.”
“Well, at least he can take comfort in the fact that though, you’re becoming my queen, that you’ll be more like a duchess in the family dynamic.”  He chuckled a little bit.
She couldn’t help but smile.  “I’m not interested in becoming royalty, ‘Miah.  I just want to be yours forever.”
“And as soon as your Daddy walks you down that aisle and we say ‘I do’, you will be, beautiful.  Hell as far as I’m concerned, you already are.  Wedding band or no wedding band.  And, I’ve been thinking, once we’ve said our vows, we should look into getting a place of our own.”
“Where?”
“Around here somewhere.  It will be nice to have our own space again and not have to worry about people being nosy all the time.  Don’t get me wrong, I love my brothers and sisters but I’m to the point where I can’t take this shit of Jake asking my how things are going anymore.  He’s officially struck my last nerve.”
“Well, there is a nice little house about a block away from the clinic.  We could always look at that after we get back from our honeymoon.”
“Where are we going for our honeymoon, anyway?”
“I don’t know.  Let me think on that and I’ll get back to you.  How does that sound?”
“That’s fine by me.  We still have a couple of months to think about it.”
-----------------
After the marathon, David and Brie managed to get up and move around so that they could go meet Joe at the docks so that they could go diving.  When they approached the boat, Joe couldn’t help but laugh.  “Moving a little stiffly today, are we?”
“It’s not a crime to use creative persuasion to convince your significant other to let you do something that you have your heart set on”, Brie responded.  David just gave him the finger.
Joe laughed harder.  “Creative persuasion, Brie?  It looks like you two had each other in positions that are only legal in India.”
“Would you believe that we didn’t?”
“No, not really.”
“Oh well, then.  I don’t have to convince you of anything.  I know what happened before we got here.”
“My question is, are you two in any condition to dive?”
“We can dive”, David said.  “We just need to get the blood flowing in certain extremities.”
“Like your legs?”
“Something like that.  Do we have full tanks?”
“No, David, they’re empty.  The gauges just read that their full”, Joe answered sarcastically.
David gave him the finger again with a big sarcastic grin.  “Well, let’s get the fuck out of here then.”
“You do realize that here in Egypt, you have to have a permit for things like this, right?”
“We do have a permit to dive.  I have a life time permit here.”
“Lucky bastard”, Joe mumbled under his breath.  “Well, come on you two; let’s get you out on the water so that you can go under.”
Carefully, David got onboard first, then helped Brie.  Once they had their life jackets on and were seated, Joe started the boat and took them out into the middle of the sea.
As the boat skipped across the water, they both smiled.  Neither knew what the other was thinking, but that was ok.  They didn’t need to know because they were thinking the same thing.  God, I’m the luckiest person alive.  I’ve got my soul mate sitting next to me.  What more could I ever ask for?

Chapter 33

James cautiously knocked on the hotel room door and waited for his girlfriend to open it.  When he heard the door locks turning he finished the text he was sending his twin telling him to keep an eye out for the SOS.  He stuffed his phone back in his pocket as the door came open.  “Hi, Jay- jay.  Thanks for coming.  I really needed to talk to you”, Kim said.  She stepped out of the way so that he could come in.
He walked through the door and did something that was a signature of his father’s.  He crosses his arms over his chest.  “Well, I don’t have long.  Jake said he could only watch Hunter for about two hours before he had to get ready to go to work.  He’s gotta make stops at both hospitals tonight.  You have my undivided for an hour.  Let’s get down to brass taxes, Kimberly.  Why am I here?”  He remained standing as he waited for her to start speaking.
“Well, first of all, I wanted to apologize, again, for being so horrible to you.  I was trying to do better then out of nowhere I became this evil, unbearable harpy that no one should have had to put up with.  I am very, very sorry for the way I treated you.”
He nodded.  “Apology accepted.  Now, what is this huge bombshell that you didn’t want to drop on me   over the phone?”
“You might wanna sit down for this, Jay- jay.  I’m sure that what I’m about to tell you will take your knees out from under you.”
“To take a line from my parent’s playbooks, get on with it.  The foreplay is getting rather boring.  Just say it, Kimberly.  Remember, I don’t have all fucking day.”  He was struggling not to lose his cool.  It was bad enough that he had to be so guarded with her because he loved her.  All he wanted was for her to be his and to be hers.  But, she had to be insufferable.
She took a deep breath to steady herself.  “James, like I told you over the phone.  I know why I’ve been acting the way I have.”  She pulled the tiny white stick from her purse.  “James, I’m pregnant.”
James didn’t hear the last part of what she said.  The world became white noise through his shock.  “Does that say what I think it says?” he asked.  “You’re pregnant, aren’t you?”  He looked up to see her nodding.  She mouthed, that’s what I just said.  Aren’t you listening to me?  He sat down on the bed and picked up the little stick.  He stared at it.  He couldn’t help it.  OH MY FUCKING GOD”, he said.  I’M GOING TO BE A FATHER.”  He looked at Kimmy.  “Pack your things.  I need to get you back to the house in enough time to talk to Jake.  I think his decision is that one that lets you back into the house.”
“Your Mom told me to have Jake call her and your Dad once I have my head on straight.”
James nodded.  “Ok.  That’s fine.  Just grab your things and let’s get you checked out of here and back to the house.  I’m sure that once Mom and Dad hear this they’ll let you back in.”
All Kimmy would do was nod as she gathered her things and got ready to leave.
As she got ready to leave, James sent Jeremiah a text.  ‘Miah, she’s coming back and she has a bombshell for everyone.  Break out the ‘gars, bro.  Break out the ‘gars.
---------------
The phone ringing woke them both from a dead sleep.  Didn’t people realize that they were on a different side of the planet?  As David jolted awake, he cursed himself for not putting his phone on vibrate or silent so that he and his wife could get a peaceful night’s sleep.  He snatched the phone off of the bedside table in the hotel room and answered it with a sleepy growl.  “HELLO?”
“Dad, I know it’s late over there, but this is important”, the voice of his son Jacob said.
“It had better be or you’re a dead man when I get back there, Jacob Micah.  You now have my undivided attention.  What can I do for you?”
“I’m calling about Kimmy.  Apparently, she’s figured out why she was such a bitch the last few days you and Mom were home.”
David growled under his breath.  “I’m all fucking ears, Jacob!  Spill it before I kick your ass when I get home.”
“She wants to tell you herself.”
“Then put her on the fucking phone, Micah.  It’s not that fucking hard.”
“Mr. Draiman”, the sheepish voice of Kimberly said as she spoke.
“What’s going on, Kim?  Make it fast.  My patience is wearing thin.”
“I figured out what’s going on.  I was hoping you and Mrs. Draiman could come home so that I don’t have to tell you over the phone.”
Brie reached up and snatched the phone from her husband.  After turning the speaker on, she spoke rather curtly.  “If you don’t speak and make it quick, I’m killing people when I get back there.  We were dead asleep.  What could be so fucking important that you couldn’t wait until we were up for the day?”
“Mrs. Draiman”, Kim said shyly, “I’m pregnant.”
“WHAT?” the Draiman’s said in unison.
“Yes, I’m pregnant.  I’ve been so horrible and insufferable because I’ve been hormonal.”
“Does James know?” David asked.
“Yeah, Dad, I know”, James said.  “And I’m stoked.  This is the first time since you know who died that I’ve been excited about the prospect.”
“Well, Mazltov to both of you.  We’re going back to sleep.  James, I pray to God that you plan on doing the right thing.  Get Kimmy settled back into the house and we’ll see you when we get back.  GOOD NIGHT”, David said curtly, then hung up.  He and his wife settled back into the bed and were back to sleep in no time.
---------------
James, Kim, Jake, and Jeremiah all exchanged a look.  “Well, that went over well”, James laughed.  Kim headed upstairs to get settled back into the room she shared with James and Hunter.
“Yeah, if you call well waking up a pissed off grizzly in the middle of his winter nap, then I’d have to agree”, Jeremiah said with the shake of his head.  “And you’d think the two of you would know better than to wake Mom and Dad when they’re sleeping.  They’re getting older.  They need their rest.”
“I’m telling Dad you said that”, Jake laughed.
“And I’ll take that ass kicking that comes with it.”
Jake just shook his head and laughed.  “That’s rich.  Well, kids, I’ve got to get ready for work.  Being the boss at two separate hospitals tends to be a bit if a bitch and this is thankfully the only night I have to combine the two.  When Delilah gets back from the clinic, let her know where I am if she asks.  I’m going out back to shower and get ready to go to work for the evening.”  And with that, Jake walked out the back door and out to his little apartment in the back.
“It must be nice to have that old pool house back there”, ‘Miah mused.
“Yeah, but I can imagine that having two children back there makes having Mommy and Daddy time a touch difficult.”
“Not as quiet as Delilah is.  She and Jake don’t get loud from what I understand.”
“Not like Mom and Dad or Maddie and Colton.”
“Yeah.  The ONE night those two stayed over here, I wished that Dad had sound proofed Maddie’s room so that I didn’t have to hear it.”
“I bet.  It’s nice to be at the other end of the hallway from her room.”
“You know what I’m dreading, Jay?”
“What’s that, ‘Miah?”
“Jessi starting to date seriously.  I mean, she’s going to have a hard enough time of people trying to take advantage of her because of her name and the poor girl is so damn innocent.  I think she’s going to be the first of all of us kids to marry a virgin.”
“Yeah, and the day that happens hell will freeze over.”
“The day a Draiman marries as a virgin?”
“Yeah.  You obviously don’t know what your baby sister does in her spare time.”
“Oh?  Then, please enlighten me, twin brother.  Is there some little piss ant jock that could never hold a candle to you after our baby sister?”
“Oh no, ‘Miah.  It’s worse than some locker jockey.  I’d welcome a locker jockey.”
“Oh, shit.  I’m officially afraid.  What is he?”
“’Miah, promise me you won’t get pissed.”
“I’ll do no such thing.  You’ll spill it or I’ll beat it out of you, James.”
“He’s an aspiring rock star.”
“Dad will never go for it.  He’ll kill the kid first.”
“The fact that he’s defiled his baby girl before even bothering to make an attempt to come to the house to introduce himself won’t help the boys case in Dad’s eyes.  Jessi is THE BABY.  Dad won’t stand for that shit.”
“No kidding.  May God have mercy on that poor boy’s soul.”
---------------
When young Jessi finally came in for the evening, she was stared down by four of her five brothers.  Jake was at work, so that left Malachai, James, Jeremiah, and her twin Marc.  The living room was dark, lit only by a lamp that sat on the end table.  It was the lamp their father usually used to write when he was working in a new album and needed the peace and quiet.  “Have a seat, Jessykah Danyelle”, Malachai said darkly.  Jessi sat down in poorly lit room and looked at her brothers.  Malachai started.  “Normally this would be Jake’s job, but seeing as he’s at work and I’m kinda like the next in line to be in charge, I’m filling in.  Now, James has informed all of us that you’re dating some little punk wannabe rock star that doesn’t have the decency to introduce himself to any of us as while he’s screwing you.  What do you have to say about this?”
“That it’s really none of any of your business, ‘Chai.  Who I screw is who I screw.  You guys don’t have to like it.”
“Oh, I’d LOVE to hear you say that to DAD were he here”, James said.
“I wouldn’t say it to Dad because he’s the patriarch of our family.  He is the head of the Draiman clan.  You don’t disrespect the alpha.”
“And if it were Jake having this little chit chat with you rather than us?”
“He’s Dad’s beta.  He has rank.”
“Oh, really?” Malachai said.  “Fine, Jake will be home shortly.  He had a short night at the hospitals.  We’ll fill him in when he walks in and you can explain yourself to him.”
“Fine.  Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go get a shower while we wait on Jake to get home.”  She stood from where she was standing and went for the stairs.
“Oh, I bet Dad’s going to want to hear about this”, Jeremiah said once his baby sister was out of ear shot.
“Who wants to bet me money that Dad flips his lid when he finds out?” Malachai asked.
James and Jeremiah exchanged a look, then spoke in unison.  “We don’t take fools bets, ‘Chai.”
Malachai laughed.  “It’s been a LONG fucking time since you two have done that.”
Marc had remained quiet through the whole thing.  Jeremiah couldn’t help but notice.  “Marc, what’s on your mind, little brother?”
“My twin and the punk she’d dating.  I can’t wait until he finally shows his face on the property.  I’m going to beat him within an inch of his life.”
“Damn!” Malachai said in shock.  “You don’t like him, do you?”
“Let’s just say that I’m not his biggest fan.”
“Do you know him?” James asked.
“Yeah, he went to school with Jessi and me.  His name is Jeremy Caldwell.  He fancies himself a modern day version of Dad.”
“Our father’s a one of a kind”, Jake’s voice said from the door.  “Now, what’s the importance of young Mr. Caldwell?”
“He’s dating Jessi and he hasn’t bothered to come introduce himself to us or Dad.  What’s more, he’s bragging that he’s banging the David Draiman’s baby girl.  Thinks that’s going to get him some sort of clout to get a record deal.”
“Wait until Jordan hears about that.  She’ll rip his head off herself”, Malachai said as he rolled his eyes.
“Oh, Miss Jessykah and I are going to have a talk”, Jake said as he shrugged out of his lab coat.  “JESSYKAH DANYELLE!” he shouted.  “LIVING ROOM; NOW!”  The end of the shout sounded like a roar.  Jake wasn’t happy to have to be dealing with this after having just walked in the door from work.
Jessi came down the stairs in a pair of pajama pants and a tank top.  “You bellowed, Jacob?”
“Lose that tone and park your ass.”  Jake wasn’t fooling around.  He was going to get answers.  Once Jessi was seated, he gave her a hard stare.  “From the top, tell me about this boyfriend of yours.  Skimp in NO details; understood?”
She looked at him blankly.  “His name is Jeremy Caldwell.  He sings for this little punk type band called Foresight.”
“How long have you two been together?”
“A few months.  We started seeing each other about a month after I got back from the Olympics.”
“And he knows who you are, who your father is- all that good shit; right?”
“Yes.”
“Are you sleeping together?”
“I don’t see how…”
ANSWER THE FUCKING QUESTION, DANYELLE!
Jessi’s eyes shot open wide.  “Yes.”
“Why hasn’t he been over here to introduce himself to Dad?”
“Do all of my older sisters bring their significant others home to meet Daddy?”
“Yes, as a matter of fact.  All of them have.  Jordan has brought every single girlfriend she’s had home to meet our parents.  Maddie’s brought her boyfriends home to meet Dad.  Meagan brought her boyfriend home over the holidays as did Makayla.  You, dear baby sister, are the only one of us to have a, quote, ‘significant other’, unquote, and NOT bring them home.  How do you plan to rectify this, Jessykah Danyelle?”
“I… don’t… know?”
“Wrong answer.”  Jake pulled his cell phone out of his pocket and gave their parents a call before getting ready for bed.  He’d had a busy day and it wasn’t getting any better.  All he wanted to do was crawl in bed next to his wife and go to sleep.  This shit’s going to give me a fucking ulcer, I swear, he thought as he waited for his mother to answer her phone.

Chapter 32

David and Brie left for Israel the following day as planned.  Before leaving town they stopped at the hotel that they’d dropped Kimmy off at the day before and made sure that she was ok and had enough money to survive until she was ready to go back.  She informed them that she missed her little boy, but she knew what was happening was for the best.
Once they were out of the country and on the ground in Jerusalem, Ben picked them up like he had the last time they paid a visit.
Though they were on vacation, it was still a business trip.  They were looking at places that could possibly be their future home after he retired.  Neither of them could have been more excited.
The first house they looked at was a big house set on the side of a hill.  They walked the inside and looked around.  Brie’s face said everything that she thought about the house as the real estate agent told them about how it was steeped in history and all of the historical figures that had called it home.  “Yeah, you can tell”, Brie said.  Her tone held the disdain she had for the building.
“What’s wrong, baby?” David asked.
“I don’t like this house, David”, she said bluntly, not caring if the real estate agent was in the room or not.  “It sets me on edge.”
“What do you mean?”
“You know how I’m always going on about energy and stuff like that.”
“Yeah.”
“This house has a really bad energy to it.  I’ve had a creepy crawly feeling since we stepped on the property.”
“What do you think is causing that creepy feeling?”
She cleared her throat and signed to him, “There was evil done here.  Real and true evil.
He nodded.  “You know what?  I feel it too.  I just wanted to make sure that I wasn’t crazy.”  He looked at the agent.  “Where’s the next house?”  The agent gave him the address of the next house they were considering and agreed to meet them there.  They loaded into the rental car they’d gotten the day after they arrived and headed to the next location.  “What do you think could have gone down there?” he asked as they drove.
“I don’t know, but I certainly don’t want to find out.  I’m glad we got out of there when we did.  It was getting to the point where I just couldn’t stand being in that house anymore.  I was about to walk out and off of the property if we were in there any longer.”
“Was it really that bad, Brie?”
“Yes, David, it was really that bad.  That place gave me the hebbie jeebies.”
“Well, it was the first on a long list of places for us to look at while we’re here.  Hopefully, there won’t be any others that creepy.”
---------------
Kimberly sat in the hotel room and really thought about what was making her act the way she was.  She wasn’t usually a confrontational person.  She was emotional, but not nearly as emotional as she had been.  Then a thought occurred to her.  She grabbed her calendar out of her purse and looked at the dates.  She recorded every aspect of her life on that calendar.  When she bled, when she ovulated, when she and her Jay- jay made love.  Her jaw dropped.  OH MY GOD!” she gasped.  “I need a pregnancy test.”  She grabbed her purse and ran out the door, making sure that she had her room key with her before she left.
She ran down the sidewalk to the nearest drug store.  Once she was in, she looked for the pregnancy tests.  She was almost positive that she was pregnant, but she wanted something solid to show James when she called him.  She wanted to talk to him about what was going on and to apologize.  Until the moment before she ran out of her hotel room, she’d had no idea why she was acting the way she was.  She found the test she wanted and paid for it before going to the bathroom and taking the test right there.  She didn’t want to wait any longer than she had to.  She had the test and she wanted answers.
She waited with bated breath as the two little blue lines came up on the little stick and her heart sank.  For the love of GOD, did this really have to happen NOW? , she thought to herself.  She picked up the little stick and slipped it in her purse so that she could leave.
Once she was on the other side of the entrance to the drug store, she pulled her phone from her purse and called James.  She got his voice mail.  What’s up?  This is James Draiman’s phone.  I’m probably preoccupied seeing as you’re getting my voicemail.  Just leave me a few lines stating who you are, what you want, and how I can get back in contact with you and I’ll get back to you as soon as I’m untied.  Later, gator!
“Jay- jay, this is Kimmy.  I hope you haven’t deleted my number from your phone yet, but if you have, I probably deserve it.  I’ve been an unbearable bitch as of late, but I now know why and I really need to talk to you.  If you could call me back as soon as you get this, I’ll be forever grateful and relieved.  I love you, Jay- Jay.  Bye.”  She sighed a heavy sigh as she walked into the lobby of her hotel.  Ok, here’s what I’ll do.  I’ll go back to my room and get some room service and maybe watch a little bit of TV.  If he hasn’t called me back in about an hour, then I’ll try again.  And, with that determination, Kimberly Elaine Goodman went to her room and tried not to focus on the little stick in her purse that said that she was about to ruin James Matthew Draiman’s life even more than she already had.
---------------
James had spent a good portion of the morning either playing with his son, and niece and nephews, or helping his brothers and sisters in law try to get the house in order.    His parents had only been gone for a few days and the house looked it.  His mother would have cringed if she had seen it.  Then, everyone in the house, including the grandkids, would have had to sit and listen to her bitch about how she didn’t raise a bunch of swine and how her house shouldn’t look like a pig sty.
When he finally had a chance to catch his breath, he had just gotten Hunter down for his nap.  He sat and ate a little bit of lunch before cleaning any more.  As his sister in law made him and his brothers a little bit of lunch, he checked his phone.  He had a missed call and a new voice message.  His listened to Kimmy’s voice, near tears, as she told him that she loved him and need to talk to him.  He sighed.  “Jake, ‘Miah, I have a dilemma”, he said with the sigh.
“What’s wrong little brother?” Jake asked.  ‘Miah just looked in his direction.
“I just got a call from Kimmy.  She said that she needs to talk to me and that she realizes she’s been an unbearable bitch.  I think it’s a trap for her to start an argument over Dad’s decision to put her out for a little while.”
“Did she apologize for being a, quote, ‘unbearable bitch’, unquote?” ‘Miah asked his twin.
“No, but she was on the verge of tears.”
“How often does she cry?” Jake asked.
“Not often.”
“And you’re wanting to know if you should go?” ‘Miah asked.
“Well, yeah.  I mean, think about it, ‘Miah.  Every time I turn around, she’s picking a fight with me.  Can you blame me for being cautious?”
“No, I don’t, but I still think you should go.  Maybe she’s not trying to fight with you over Dad telling her to pack her things and leave.”
“But, should I really risk it?”
“What did the message say other than she knows she’s been an unbearable bitch?” Jake asked, interrupting the twins arguing.
“That she needed to talk to me.  She asked me to call her back as soon as I got the message.”
“Then, call and see what she wants rather than sitting here discussing the could be, should be with ‘Miah and me.”
James nodded and dialed Kimmy’s cell number from memory.  “Hello?” she asked after the second ring.
“Hey, Kimmy.  It’s Jay.  What did you need?”
She sighed.  “I’m so glad you called.  I was starting to get worried that you never wanted to speak to me again and I would have understood.  I’ve been so terrible to you.”
“Is this your version of an apology?”
“No, Jay- jay.  I’d rather do that in person.  I also have something that I need to tell you.  I know why I’ve been so bitchy recently.”
“And why might that be?”
“That’s something I’d rather talk about in person too, please.  I don’t want to drop this kind of bombshell on you over the phone.”
He nodded.  “Ok, let me see if my brothers and sisters would mind watching Hunter and I’ll be there as soon as I can be.”
“Ok, Jay- jay.  I’ll see you when you get here.”
---------------
The other houses they looked at that day were a lot better.  None of them set off the ‘creepy- ohmmeter’ Brie seemed to come ‘off the lot’ with.  But, Brie still didn’t like any of them.  That night, she sighed as she got into bed next to her husband.  “I think we need to look at smaller houses”, she said as she settled into bed next to him.
“I think I’m with you on that.  Yeah, most of the houses we looked at today are nice, but maybe we should look at something small enough for the two of us rather than looking for something that we’re going to have to take care of year round and we’re only going to be seeing the kids once a year.”
“You took the words right out of my mouth”, she said with a laugh.
“So, my thoughts are these:  I’ll let the real estate agent know that we’re looking for something smaller and let her compile a list.  While she’s doing that, we can go to Egypt for a couple of days so that we can dive in the Red Sea.  How does that sound?”
“I like the way you think, David Draiman.  Now, will your friend Captain Joe be taking us out or will it be another friend of yours?”
“No, it will be Captain Joe.  He’s has a boat out there and he said he’s more than happy to take us out on the water this time around as well.”
She nodded.  “Alrighty then”, she said with a smile.  “It all sounds like a plan to me, baby.”
“Good.  So, a smaller place it is.  Besides, we have passports for a reason.  We can go to them for Hanukkah.  Not like it will kill us to get on a plane once a year to go see the kids.”
“Very true.  Anyway, it will be nice to be the expected guest for once and have the kids scrambling to make sure that everything is perfect for us rather than you and I having to plant a foot in all ten kids’ asses to motivate them.”  She paused.  “I wonder what our house looks like now that we’re not there.”
“Probably like a fucking tornado tore through it.”
“Not that that’s a surprise.  I just hope they try to keep it looking half assed decent.  I’d hate to give my ‘I didn’t raise a bunch of swine’ speech again.”
“Oh, GOD.  The memories.  And then there was the ‘Were you all born in a barn?’ speech that you would periodically go off on the guys with.  That was funny.”
“Well, when Nikki, Tina, and  Kristen were coming to me saying that their men didn’t tow the line as well as you when it came to keeping the house clean, I took that seriously.  I made them clean up after themselves under threat of being shot.”
“That would have been funny as hell.  I’m just saying.”
“Of course you would have thought it was funny.  It wasn’t you getting a nine millimeter round in your ass.  And that’s right where I would have planted those rounds had they pushed me; right in their asses.”

Chapter 31

One afternoon at the end of February , David snuck out and headed into town.  He was craving some of his sweets from the little bakery in town and he would have them; yes, he would have them.  He had the little paper sack tucked under his jacket as he tried to sneak into the house without being caught by anyone.  He peaked around the door at the foyer and living room and found that there was no one around.  He bolted for the stairs and ran up them straight to his office.  Once he was on the other side of his office door, he shut and locked the door.  As he turned around, he got a surprise.  “So, did you plan on sharing, love?” the sweet voice of his wife floated through the air.

He turned to see her sitting in his office chair behind his desk.  “DAMN IT!” he sighed with feeling.  “How did you know?”

“Well, I’d shouted up here to see if you could run into town and get something for me and I got no response.  Then, I called your cell to ask the same question and you didn’t answer.  I have you figured out, David Michael.”

He walked over to the desk and set the sweets that he’d snuck out to get on his desk.  “I’m too obvious sometimes.”

She smiled at him and laughed.  “You think?”

He sat on the edge on the desk as he laughed.  “So, what do I have to do to get you to leave me to the sweets I have in that bag?”

“Oh, you’re sadly mistaken if you think I’m going to just leave you to your treats.  You can either share them with me or I’m going to send our grandchildren in here to harass you for your sweets.  Take your pick.”

“They’ll clean me out.  I won’t get any of my snacks if you send the grandkids in here.”

“And you know I won’t eat that many because I can’t eat a lot of sweets.  So, which is the lesser of the two evils?”

He reached behind in and grabbed the paper sack of sweets from his favorite bakery in town.  “Take your pick, I suppose”, he said with mock disappointment.

She snatched the bag from his hand and ripped it open down the side to see exactly what all he had in there.  She folded her arms over her chest, just under her breasts, and gave him a look that clearly said, ‘you’ve been caught red handed, mister’.  “They’re all jelly filled doughnuts, David.  You went to the Jewish bakery on Main street, didn’t you?”

“Guilty”, he said with red cheeks.

“David, I make these during Hanukkah.  You can’t wait a year in between fixes?”

“Nope.”

She laughed so hard she couldn’t breathe.  “You’re too much.”  When she caught her breath, he shook her head.  “Ok, you do know that all you have to do is ask me to make them, right?  It’s the same principle as with challah.  Just ask and ye shall receive.”

“You’d make sufganiyot when it’s not Hanukkah because I have a sweet tooth?”

“I make latkes for the kids all the time even though it’s not Hanukkah.  Why wouldn’t I make sufganiyot for you?”

He shrugged as he picked up one of the small jelly-filled confections and popped it into his mouth, then licked the powdered sugar off of his fingertips.  “So, are we ready to go back to Israel tomorrow?” he asked once he was done chewing.

She nodded.  “Of course I’m ready to go back to Israel.  I’m ready for us to finally move out there.”
“You only have to wait another year, baby.  The guys and I are going to do that one final concert in Chicago and then we’re officially retired and you and I can move out of the United States to the Holy Land to live out the rest of our lives.  How does that sound?”

She laughed.  “You make it sound so easy like that.  But, you’re forgetting that we have to have Abe draw up the papers to sell this place to Jake, Jeremiah and Jona’s wedding, Jay and Kimmy are supposed to make things official soon.  If they don’t, I’m breaking my foot off in James’ ass.”

“Ok, you’re right.  A guy can dream can’t he?”

“I suppose”, she said with a smile.  “But the next time I start dreaming, don’t burst me bubble if you don’t want yours burst.”

---------------

As they moved through their bedroom packing their things for their trip, Jake knocked on his parents’ opened bedroom door.  “Can I ask you two something real fast?” he asked.

“I don’t see why not, Jake”, Brie said as she folded a pair of slacks and put them in her suitcase.

“Come on in, Jake”, David said after putting a pair of his dress slacks into his suitcase.

Jake came in and sat on the chaise lounge that was about three feet from the foot of his parents’ bed.  “Do you two really have to leave again?” he asked.

“Do you want this place to yourself anytime soon, Jacob Micah?” David asked his first born son.

“I do, but I’m not sure I can handle having everyone around while you two are gone.”

“Then tell those who don’t live here to scram”, Brie said as if it were terribly obvious.

“It’s not Jordan, Maddie, and Malachai that pester me.  It’s just having everyone crammed into the house.”

“Who is it specifically that’s bothering you, Jacob?” David asked.

“Specifically, it’s Jay and Kimmy.  She picks far too many fights and she tends to try to fight with Jay in front of the kids.  I know you’ve talked to her about it, Mom, but she still does it.”

“What does James do?” David asked.

“He just walks away and tells that when she can talk to him like he’s an adult and not a child, they can continue the conversation.”

They both sighed.  “What are we going to do about this, David?  I can’t leave the house in discord before we leave”, Brie asked.

“Maybe I need to talk to Kimberly, give her an idea of what James’ is going through trying to step in as Hunter’s Daddy; and let her know that it’s not an easy task that Jay’s undertaken.”

“If that’s that you feel needs to be done, love, then it needs to be done.”

“All I ask is that it be done soon.  I know that this house will be total chaos the entire time you’re gone if this problem doesn’t get solved before you two leave in the morning.  Oh, who’s taking you to the airport?”

“Maddie and Colton”, Brie said.

“And who’s picking you up when you come home?”

“We’ll leave that up to you to decide, Jake”, David said.  “It’s good practice for you seeing as you’re taking over as head of the family after your mother and I move.”

“That soon?”

“You’ll only be the head of the family while your mother and I are away.  When we’re here, I’m the boss.”

Brie laughed.  “Or so you think.”

“True.  I’m not the one that keeps shit running flawlessly around here.  That’s you.”  He leaned in to give his beautiful wife a kiss.

Jake waited to see sadness in his father’s face as he spoke, and it never came.  Instead of sadness and regret that he missed things and couldn’t always be around, there was pride that he’d found such a wonderful and understanding woman to keep things going when he couldn’t be around.  Jake was happy to see that his father was finally letting go of the guilt he carried from not always being able to be around after the War.  “Well, I’ll let you two get back to what you were doing.  Dad, as soon as you can have your chat with Kimmy, please do.”

Jake headed for the door and started to shut it behind him. “Leave it open, Jake”, Brie called.  He walked away with a smile on his face, having left his parents’ bedroom door open in case one of his siblings needed to talk to their Mom and Dad before they left.

---------------

David knocked softly on James’ bedroom door, hoping that Kimberly would be the one to answer the door.  He was right.  “I’m not speaking to you right now, James.  Keep dreaming.”

“I’m not James”, David said plainly.  “Open this door before I kick it in.”

“If you’re here to lecture me, Mr. Draiman, I’m not interested.”

“Then here’s what you can do.  You can pack your shit and yours alone and get the hell out of my house.  Leave Hunter here.  My wife and I will make sure he’s taken care of.”

The door swung open.  “Are you serious?” she practically screeched.

“Is there anything on my face or in my tone that suggests that I’m kidding?”  He was perfectly calm.  “I think you need to take a little times away and learn a few things.  I came up here politely to talk to you and you’re going to get rude?  I think not.  If you’re going to act like that then you can leave.  I don’t tolerate that out of my children, my daughters in law, my son in law, or my grandchildren.  I’m certainly not going to tolerate it from you.”

She stared at him like he’d grown a second head.  “You wouldn’t put a girl who has nothing out on the street.”

He nodded.  “You’re right.”  He pulled his wallet out of his back pocket and handed her a couple hundred buck.  “Use it wisely, but leave.  You’re not to come back to my property until you can show me that you can treat my son, my house, and myself with respect.”

She took the money, her face frozen in shock.  “You’re not kidding are you?”

“No, I’m not.  I think you need to take a little bit of time to separate yourself from not only James, but Hunter as well.  You just need to be away from everything that goes on here.  Figure out what’s going on with you, then come back so that you can be a mother to your son and a girlfriend to mine.”

---------------

David went down the stairs and called to the two of his sons sitting in the living room.  “Jacob, James, conference; NOW”, he said as he headed toward the kitchen.  The two young men jumped and followed their father.  “Why don’t you two take the kids into town to get some ice cream or something like that?” David said as he handed them a wad of twenties.  “Make it Grampa’s treat.”

“Dad, what’s going on?” James asked.

“Kim’s leaving the house for a few days.”  James was on the verge of panic before David could continue.  “Calm down, James Matthew.  Hunter’s staying here and I’m not going to toss her out on the streets with no money and no way to get a hotel room.  I’m not heartless.  Now, Hunter doesn’t need to see his mother leaving, so take him with Miri, Ira, and Levi to go get some ice cream.  I’ll explain where his Mommy is to him when you get back.”

“Dad, ice cream doesn’t cost $120”, Jake joked.

“Just take the money and bring my back the change, Jacob Micah.”

“Yes, sir.”  He grabbed his younger brother’s arm.  “Come on, Jay.”  James followed his brother to the living room.  “Who wants ice cream?” Jake asked the kids.  As they all jumped up and down, Jake spoke again.   “Well, let’s all get some shoes on and we’ll go.”

After everyone was gone, David grabbed Brie and they took Kimberly into town to get her a hotel room.
“We’re not sure how long she’s going to need the room, but until she checks out, charge the room alone to this card”, Brie said to the desk clerk when she checked Kim into the hotel room.  She handed the young woman her bank card.

“Yes, Ma’am.”

The clerk checked put Kim in a room on the second floor.  Once she was in, Brie looked at her gently.  “Kimmy, this is for the best.  Once you figure out what’s going on with you, then you can really be there for Hunter and James.”

“I’m scared, Mrs. D.  Hunter’s never been without me.”

“And I highly doubt that he’ll realize you’re gone.  Trust me, you’ll feel better about taking care of him and being with Jay after you do this.”

“Did you do something like this when you first got with David?”

“I was forced into two months away from my son, Malachai.  It’s a really long story that I’ll have to sit you down and tell you sometime, but now is not the time.”

She nodded, tears filling her eyes.  “I’ll get my shit sorted out while I’m away.  When I’m ready to come back, what do I do?  You and your husband will be out of the country.”

“When you have your head sorted out and on straight, go back to the house and have Jake call David and me.  From there, we’ll decided whether or not you’re ready to come back to the house.”

“Ok, Mrs. Draiman.  That sounds like a plan.  Have a safe trip.”

“We will, Kimmy.  Take care of yourself.”
